Lincoln Pea (RM2 - 3 seeds)

Ok, what's so special about Lincoln pea?  Well, Lincoln pea adalah antara jenis shelling peas yang tahan hot weather.  Hopefully that includes weather di Negara kita Malaysia.  Most shelling peas adalah cool weather crops.  Give it a try.

Growing tips: Do not over water during germination period sebab peas sangat mudah rot.  Usually, saya akan siram sekali semasa mula semai dan biarkan dalam 3 hari or bila Tanah berasa kering.  Germination time lebih kurang 1 minggu or so. 

Armenian Cucumber (RM2 - 4 seeds)

 

It's actually a melon tapi rasa cam cucumber.  I haven't yet given it a try - baru je semai.  From reviews, ramai yang give thumbs up on this cukes.  This cuke, the longer you leave on the vine, the longer it gets and seedier.  The recommended length adalah 12-18 inch saja kalau nak makan.

 

Germintation tips: It's good to soak the seeds first for 12 hours and sow.  Takes up to a week to germinate.

 

Some petua:  Ada kalanya kita semai benih cucumber and it refuses to sprout.  This is what I had done (It was an experiment actually).  Untuk benih timun yang degil tak mahu sprout perhaps kita boleh 'pujuk' dia sikit.  Apa yang saya buat adalah saya semai dalam peti sejuk, yes peti sejuk.  Bukan freezer tau.  Letak benih dalam medium semaian dah spray dengan air supaya medium semaian lembap.  Then tutup (semai dalam bekas plastic bertutup) and biarkan selama seminggu.  Periksa sekiranya belum tumbuh, biarkan lagi seminggu.  In my experiment, benih timun degil (bukan benih Armenian cucumber ya hehe), it took me 2 weeks to see the seeds (all of them in my case) to break open.  Then, bila dah mula sprouting, boleh la cuba letak di luar.

 

Trick ini juga berkesan untuk benih bunga matahari. 

Tapi kalau benih tak bercambah juga, ada kemungkinan benih dah mati.

Others

Epsom Salt (Garam Epsom) RM1.80/100gm

Kegunaan Garam Epsom adalah pelbagai.  Paling popular adalah untuk tujuan, scrub mandian dan rendaman kaki/tangan.

Garam Epsom juga digunakan untuk tanaman seperti cili, tomato dan timun untuk menangani masalah kekurangan nutrient magnesium dan sulfat.  Biasanya garam Epsom akan ditabur atau disembur pada tanaman. 

Untuk pembelian Garam Epsom, kos pos adalah bergantung kepada berat yang disorder dan juga jenis pos yang dipilih.  Secara umum, kadar pos biasa parcel adalah RM7 untuk 2 kg yang pertama (sila rujuk disini) namun, saya akan reserve 100gm untuk berat packaging.

Italian basil ni biasanya digunakan dalam masakan macam sos spaghetti atau magherita pizza (yang ni saya dah buat and memang sedappp).  Satu lagi, saya suka tambahkan Italian basil dalam masakan asam rebus dan masak lemak tempoyak.  Absolutely refreshing.  Cuba lah :).

Pepper growing - general instruction and tips

Generally peppers are warm climate plant.  They like warm weather that is why growing peppers di Negara kita Malaysia agak mudah.  Peppers like well drained soil and a sunny spot.  Space pepper plant about 1.5 to 2 feet so that each plant has ample room to grow.  Mulch the soil to keep it cool and moist especially musim panas dan tak berapa nak hujan.  Kalau di kebun mini saya, my peppers seem to like partial sun - I mean, hanya terima cahaya matahari separuh hari sahaja that is why saya akan letak my pepper plants (saya suka tanam pepper plants dalam containers, senang nak alih) di tepi pagar kebun or sebelah pokok-pokok lain so that dia tak terlalu expose to heat - it works for me but you guys can experiment of course. 

Generally peppers yang saya tanam akan ambil masa 5-14 hari untuk germinate.  Actually, it's a bit tricky lah. Some take a long time while some just boom, terkeluar dari Tanah out of nowhere.  Very interesting.  Then, peppers generally start flowering after 6 weeks. 

Pepper's heat is measured by Scoville Unit (SHU).  As a comparison, bell pepper is measured at 0 SHU (tak pedas langsung) while Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is measured at half million to 2 million SHU. 

Setakat ni pepper yang paling pedas saya sedang  semai adalah Carolina Reaper HP22B, hopefully it'll germinate soon.  The SHU for Carolina Reaper is 2.2 million and it is as of now the hottest pepper in the world!  I cannot imagine macamana pedasnya tapi I can tell you this much... The pepper is so hot that saya buka peket benihnya saja jari saya dah pijar.  I did not dare to touch the seeds at all, I gently and cautiously dropped one seed to the germination pot, covered it with soil, gave it water and let it do its thing.  Hehe..

This is a mild pepper with SHU ranging from 500 to 750.  Suitable for cooking, salsa or salads.

SHU 100 000 - 350 000 (which is hotter than cili padi which measured at 50 000 - 100 000 SHU).  This pepper is commonly found in the Caribbean Islands.

Spinach dan bayam yang kita biasa beli di pasar local adalah dua sayur berbeza,  While eating spinach may not really turn you into Popeye, it is good for our eyes, bones and digestion and also our skin.  However, since spinach has oxalic acid, it's good to pair it with food high in vitamin C.

1. Make sure tiada semut semasa germinating spinach kerana semut suka makan benih spinach

Pale yellow petals with brown centre.  Macam icing on a chocolate cake.  So yummy looking!  Bloom size reaches 12 inches across and the plant is about 5-6 feet tall.  But then again, there are also other factors that affect the size of sunflowers.  Attracts bees and birds.

Zucchini or courgette or summer squash ni bukan sayur yang common di negara kita BUT it can be grown.  It'll be really interesting to try it out.

Saya pernah tanam pokok zucchini sendiri, tapi variety greyzini (bentuk lebih kurang sama dengan black beauty tapi kulit je lain).  Memang hidup subur (gambar di bawah) tapi sebelum sempat berhasil kena timpa hujan selama 4 hari berturut-turut.  Aduuhhh... sedih, tapi redha...

Growing instruction and tips
1. Tanam zucchini pada musim yang sesuai.  Kalau di negara kita ni, musim panas memang sesuai untuk menanam zucchini providing that they get enough water.  Kalau boleh jangan tanam zucchini pada musim hujan kerana risiko batang lecur dan mildew.
2. Elakkan overhead watering - batangnya adalah hollow.. and senang lecur
3. It's a fairly big plant - with proper nutrition - 1 meter distance for each plant is appropriate

I think it's a beautiful pumpkin.  Bulat and bercorak-corak.  Senang mak nak kupas.  It's suitable for pies.  Pumpkin pies are nice :)

1. Timbunkan tanah macam bukit kecil dan semai benih on top
2. Setiap bukit mestilah berjarak antara 8-10 kaki antara satu sama lain.  This is a space hogging plant :)

BENIH PARSNIP HOLLOW CROWN (RM2: 35 seeds)



Large tapering roots.  Creamy, tender, and sweet flavoured.  Parsnip ni tahan frost and actually frost akan menjadikan parsnip ni lagi manis.  Since di Malaysia kita tiada frost or cuaca sejuk, some people suggest supaya parsnip diletak dalam peti sejuk (ada yang suggest bubuh dalam crisper dan ada yang kata dalam freezer, well saya belum cuba lagi).
Saya belum pernah makan lagi parsnip ni tapi sedang tanam di garden saya sekarang.  Sangat suka dengan daun-daunnya yang cantik hijau.  Gambar di bawah:
